Wreck, Fuel Spill Ties Up Traffic in Hartwell

Traffic is flowing on SR51 in Hartwell again and a Hart County woman is recovering after a wreck Monday in Hartwell.

According to Georgia State Patrol Post Commander Al Whitworth, it happened early Monday afternoon on SR51 near Mt. Olivet Road.

“It happened about 1:30p Monday afternoon,” Whitworth said. “A small passenger car was traveling north on SR51 towards Lavonia when it crossed the center line and struck a tractor-trailer head on. The female driver in the passenger car is from Hartwell. She was transported to AnMed Regional Medical Center in Anderson with a broken leg.”

Whitworth said the driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, but the truck was carrying diesel fuel and about 80 gallons had spilled out onto the roadway.

SR51 was blocked for several hours Monday afternoon while crews worked to clean up the diesel fuel and remove the wreckage.

No word yet on what caused the driver of the vehicle to cross the center line, nor if any charges will be filed. The name of the driver of the passenger car has not yet been released.
