“Working on the Railroad” Day Set for Saturday in Hartwell

For the past year, members of a non-profit group in Hartwell known as TORCH,  have been working to redevelop Railroad St. behind Depot St.

There’s a lot that has to be done and this weekend people are invited to the first ever “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” clean up day on Saturday.

Hart County Chamber director Nikki Meyer said it’s a day for those interested to get their hands dirty and contribute to making their downtown better.

“This is going to be a fund raising opportunity for people to come out who would like to work on the railroad,” Meyer said. “We need people with garden gloves and tools and rakes. We’re going to have some heavy equipment out there to clean some things up.”

Meyer said so far, engineering and surveying work as well as architectural designs  for how Railroad St. will look one day are already in the works.

“Feel free to make any sort of donation Saturday,” Meyer said. “That will help give us the money we need to begin buying the buildings along Railroad St. That’s where we’re at right now.”

Plans are to revitalize Railraod St. and put in new shops, restaurants, an artists pavilion, walking trails and a park for children.

Volunteers will be working, Meyer said, to clean up the old platform where the pavilion will be along with other projects.

Work Saturday on the Railroad will be from 8a to 2p.  If you need more information, you can contact Meyer at the Chamber office.  That number is: 706-376-8590.
