Widow of Late Canon Mayor and Family Grateful For Recognition

The widow of Canon’s late mayor says her family is honored and thankful for a major recognition bestowed upon her husband.  The city of Canon recently dedicated the new ballfield, called the “Ray Morgan Field,” in memory of the late mayor.  According to Morgan’s wife, Wanda, seeing the completion of the ballfield was a major goal for her late husband.

While Wanda says her family was very touched by the honor, she says Mayor Morgan was a very humble man.

“He would feel honored but would’ve not wanted all the fuss that was made.  You know, we were low key.  We don’t like a lot of attention.  But myself and the family feel honored that they felt that strong about him.”

The ceremony involved the unveiling of a granite monument with a picture of Mayor Morgan and several inscriptions.  Current Mayor Annie Wallace, city council and employees from Canon, State Representative Alan Powell, and pastor Paul Creason attended the ceremony, in addition to citizens.

Wanda Morgan thanks everyone who made the event possible.

“The mayor and the council. . .I was so blessed that Pastor Paul attended and spoke, and our friend and Representative Alan Powell, and also Hillary Vaughn who helped create the monument. She spent a lot of hours on that process”

The “Ray Morgan Field” is located on Fowler Street near Canon City Park.  While it’s officially open, Wanda Morgan says just a little more work needs to be done including the completion of a walking trail.
