Water Service Disruption Today in Martin

Martin residents will be without water service for a a time today while Georgia DOT crews install a new water line.

A new water line was recently installed in the Anderson Thomas Road area and according to DOT spokesperson Teri Pope, today crews will switching water customers over to the new line.

“That will definitely affect the water pressure for Martin water customers,” she said. “The water could be turned off for several hours, but we expect the water to be turned back on by the time people get home at 5p for their family dinners.”

Pope says the work is part of the overall SR17 widening project which does include moving some utilities.

“As a general rule, Georgia DOT allows utility companies to put their infrastructure in the back of their right of way. It really benefits everyone and that way the utilities don’t have to go out and buy more land from property owners,” Pope said. “But as roads are widened, crews have to move those utilities out of the way. And on SR17 there are a lot of utilities.  In Martin, crews are working on the water lines.”

The widening of SR17 is part of the 2012 Georgia Statewide Freight and Logistics Plan, which  outlines the most viable present and future freight routes through the state.  The 6.28 mile long SR17 widening project has a contract completion date of May 31, 2016.

C.W. Matthews Contracting is building this project at a cost of $46.2 million.
