Voters in Canon will go to City Hall today to elect, formally, their new mayor and choose a city councilman

A special election is being held to fill the mayor’s seat left vacant when mayor Ray Morgan passed away in January.

City councilwoman Annie Wallace was the only person to qualify for the mayor’s race.

She is running unopposed and will fill the unexpired term of late mayor Ray Morgan who passed away on January 27.

Wallace will have to qualify again, however, in August to run for the full four-year term in November.

That leaves Wallace’s City Council seat open and two candidates are running to fill that unexpired term.

They are William Minish and Cullen Morgan, Ray Morgan’s son.

Whoever wins that city council seat will also have to qualify again in August to run for the full four-year term in November.

Early voting ended Friday and the Board of Elections and Regiatrations office reported only one early vote was cast during the two-week advance voting period, and two absentee ballots were sent in.

Those ballots will be counted tonight at 5p by the Board of Elections.

Voting begins/began at 7a and continues through 7p this evening.
