Volunteers Still Needed for Upcoming Hometown Heroes Event

Franklin County continues to work on its first Hometown Heroes event in recognition of local veterans and public safety personnel.

The all-day event is coming up Saturday, November 13 from 9a to 6p in Carnesville.

At the Board of Commissioners meeting Monday, County Manager Derrick Turner said the day will include a number of events beginning with a Dedication Ceremony for the Franklin County Veterans Memorial, Public Safety Memorial, and the unveiling of The Blue & Gold Star Memorial Markers.

He said it’s a day for the community to gather to honor those who served and have a fun time. Turner said volunteers are still needed.

The Dedication Ceremony takes place from 9a to 10a at the Franklin County Courthouse in Carnesville.

Master of Ceremony is Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Fowler and Special Guest Speaker is Kendra Lou Pieper. She is a Former Paratrooper @ 173rd Special Troops Battalion.

The Celebration portion of the event will take place on Hull Ave in Carnesville, which will be closed to traffic for the day.

At 11a is the Parade of Veterans & Public Safety Personnel from all Franklin County Community and Partners.

Franklin County’s eldest veteran will be the Grand Marshal along with several honorary marshals.

During the afternoon there will be live music, the Lavonia VFW Post 5897 will hold a Fire in the Hole Pepper eating contest. Then from 1-2 PM is the Pie in the Face for Commissioners contest.

And from 6-6:30 PM, the day will end with Fireworks & a Candle Service
