Upcoming Seminar on School Safety Aimed at First Responders, Educators

Registration is underway for a one-day seminar on ways to prevent and respond to school safety issues.

It’s called the AWR 148: Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents and it’s scheduled for Monday, March 6 at the Carnesville Fire Department.

The one-day class teaches rural law enforcement, first responders, and local school systems how to partner together to solve a school incident or crisis.

Local coordinator Clayton Bryant with the Carnesville Fire Department says the class is open to first responders, and school staff from Franklin and any other surrounding county who cares to attend.

“It’s open to Franklin County and surrounding counties in Northeast Georgia,” he said. “I just want it to be open to all first responders whether it’s EMS, fire, law enforcement, we want the school there, administrators, everybody; really anybody who has a stake in these kids’ safety at school. Just trying to get some things lined up to prepare in case something ever does happen at a school.”

Schools in small, rural, and remote areas across the country account for almost 23 percent of the total student population (more than 11 million students).

Rural schools, law enforcement, and other emergency responders are often limited in resources so it’s imperative that all potentially affected parties collaborate on planning, preparing, communicating, responding, and recovering from a school-based incident.

Bryant said a number of important topics will be covered during the class.

“There’s a whole host of things they’re going to be going over. I know they’re going to be talking about reunification after an incident, how to prepare for an incident, what to look for, just a whole list of topics they’re going over,” he said.

Other topics to be covered in the class include Introduction to Incident Planning and Preparedness, as well as:
• Proactive Threat Mitigation
• Incident Response
• Incident Recovery
• Vulnerability Assessments
• Threat Assessment Management
• Incident Defusing and Debriefing

This is a totally free class for anyone who wants to attend.

The registration deadline is February 20 and you can do that online at https://ruraltraining.org/course/AWR-148.
