Unicoi State Park Celebrates Nat’l Hunting and Fishing Day Saturday

Saturday is National Hunting and Fishing Day and you will find fun events, plenty of activities and recognition geared for outdoor enthusiasts all day at Unicoi State Park in White County.

DNR Law Enforcement Officer Craig Fulghum says the day was established by Congress in 1973 to spotlight the importance hunting and fishing has on the economy.

“It gives awareness to the economic impact in the State,” he said. “In Georgia, hunting and fishing brings in millions of dollars to the state.”

Fulghum said events Saturday at Unicoi State Park will include something for every member of the family, but many are geared toward introducing children to the sports of hunting and fishing.

“Unicoi State Park will be holding an Outdoor Adventure Day Saturday,” Fulghum said. “It starts around 10a. The streams will be stocked with trout, there will be skeet shooting and a lot of things for the kids to get involved in that highlight the resources we have in this area.”

Not only will trout fishing be free at Unicoi State Park, but on Saturday Georgia anglers will not need a fishing license or a trout license to fish on any public waters in the state including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas (PFA).

And anglers also will not need to obtain a wildlife management area (WMA) license to fish on a PFA, WMA or on Waters Creek on this day.
