Unicoi Fire in White Co Now 100% Contained Say Forestry Officials

The Unicoi Fire is now 100% contained and expected rain this week will likely help to extinguish any hot spots completely.

According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, it started on February 12 northeast of Unicoi State Park in White County, Ga.

The wildfire spread across 184 acres but as of Tuesday was listed as 100% contained.

It is being managed by a Type 3 Incident Command Team with the Georgia Forestry Commission and U.S. Forest Service in unified command.

Fire crews successfully kept the fire within control lines Monday and strengthened and improved those lines through the night.

On Tuesday, crews spent the day mopping up and patrolling to find any remaining heat sources that could threaten the lines.

Additional efforts included installing water bars and spreading native seed on fire lines to reduce potential erosion.

Smith Creek Trail remains closed to the public but there are no road closures or evacuation warnings in place.

The Forestry Commission said Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area is open at this time.
