Two Virginia men wanted in South Carolina are behind bars in Hart County, awaiting a bond hearing after being captured Tuesday afternoon.

According to Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post Sgt. Ray Dean at about 1:30p Troopers from Post 52 were contacted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in regard to a BOLO for a gray Nissan sedan bearing a Virginia license plate.

The driver and passenger were reported to have been involved in a road rage shooting incident on I-85 SB in Oconee County, SC.

According to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office the incident involved two black males in the Nissan and a couple in a Toyota 4Runner with Florida tags.

The incident began on 85SB when the driver of the Nissan reportedly tried to run the 4Runner off the road.

A chase ensued onto Highway 11 Northbound and then back onto the Interstate southbound.

As both vehicles were getting back on I-85 southbound, the 4Runner was hit by bullets that were being fired by the occupants in the Nissan.

The 4Runner eventually made its way to the southbound Welcome Center along I-85 in Georgia while the Nissan got off at Exit 177.

Dean said troopers spotted the Nissan parked off the right shoulder of GA77 in Hart County with two black males standing outside of the vehicle.

Dean said troopers pulled up alongside the Nissan and verified they matched the suspects identified in the drive-by shooting.

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said his officers also arrived at the scene to back up the troopers. During the course of the investigation, he said his investigator found a cache of weapons and drugs.

“My lead investigators, Chris Carroll, obtained a search warrant we recovered oxycodone, and other drugs out of the car. We got a large amount of money out of the car, and two automatic weapons out of the car. So those two are in our jail this morning,” Cleveland said.

Dean said on the front driver’s side quarter panel troopers found a bullet hole that appeared to be fired from the driver’s side of the Nissan.

The investigator also confirmed that the suspect’s vehicle was struck by two bullets: one that struck the rear left tire and one that lodged in the rear center headrest after shattering the rear windshield.

Both occupants were subsequently placed under arrest facing multiple charges.

“We have them on drug charges, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, marijuana charge, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime,” the Sheriff said. “Oconee County, SC is where the shooting took place. It was apparently a case of road rage and they (two suspects) opened up fire on them.”

The pair are identified as 44-year-old Enrico Natfonza Mayes of Petersburg, VA who was the driver, and 41-year-old Derek Lydell Coleman of Prince George, VA.

In South Carolina Mayes and Coleman are each charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, One count of Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime, and One count of Malicious Injury to Personal Property.

Oconee County, SC Sheriff’s office has a hold on the pair. Cleveland said they are awaiting a bond hearing and extradition back to South Carolina.
