Toccoa Wins National Award for Project

Toccoa’s newly renovated public pool complex is garnering national awards.

Recently, the Georgia Chapter of the American Public Works Association presented the City Of Toccoa with an award for the Doyle Street pool project.

Toccoa Mayor Terry Carter said City Manager Billy Morse, City Commissioner Gail Fry, and Community Development Director Connie Tabor accepted the award on behalf of the City last week during an event at St. Simons Island.

“The City of Toccoa was chosen as the Project of the Year for our Doyle Street swimming pool project. It is a very nice award, and we wanted to thank everybody that participated in that. Basically everybody with the city really did a lot work on that last year, and it is something that they can really be proud of. I appreciate the hard work on that. Congratulations on the award.”

The City Of Toccoa swimming pool had closed in 2012 after serving the public since the mid-1940s.

In November 2013, the City Commission voted to work towards totally renovating the pool complex.

The new pool complex was constructed to replicate the original 1940’s complex which included a shower house, pool, and decking.

The Doyle Street Community Pool re-opened to the public in August 2014.

This was the first award given by the Georgia Chapter of The American Public Works Association.

The award highlights excellence in the field of public works in Georgia and recognizes outstanding public works employees, individuals, groups, and projects.

The awards committee received over 50 submittals for the awards program in three different categories and 25 applicants were selected to receive a state-level award.
