Toccoa VFW Pushes Back Memorial Day Observance

Memorial Day was yesterday and many communities across Northeast Georgia took time Monday to remember those who have given their lives for the cause of freedom.

But Stephens County plans to hold their Memorial Day observance this weekend.

Rick Hack Is with the Toccoa VFW post and is also the District 2 Commander For The Georgia VFW.

Hack says the decision was made to move the Memorial Day service to Saturday, May 30 for a number of reasons.

“We felt that there were so many other things going on and celebrations on the observed day that we would honor folks and have the ceremony that Saturday,” said Hack.

Hack said the Memorial Day Observance will start at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Toccoa VFW post on West Savannah Street in Toccoa.

Hack says the Stephens County High School JROTC will also be on hand.

In addition, wreaths will be laid to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Hack says any group wanting to lay a wreath during the ceremony should contact him this week prior to this Saturday’s event.

“All they have to do is contact me,” said Hack. “If you would like to place a wreath … all you have to do is be there at about 10:30 a.m. to place your name in the script and honor your organization.”

The VFW Post 4346 in Toccoa., American Legion Post 104 in Toccoa., and the Marine Corps League Detachment 1303 in Toccoa. are all hosting this year’s ceremony on Saturday.
