pool 1-1Toccoa’s refurbished community pool will open August 7th giving kids in town a chance to get wet and have some fun just before school starts.

Crews have been working for months rebuild the Doyle St. pool and bathhouse.

Main Street And Community Development Director Connie Tabor says the public is invited to come out to the pool August 7 and enjoy the pool.

“We are inviting people to come and tour the facility and well as use it,” said Tabor. “It will be free on Thursday, August 7. Regular admission to the pool beginning Friday, August 8, will be $2 per person.”

The opening of the Doyle St. Pool brings to an end a process that started with planning in November 2013 and construction in April of this year.
Tabor says the city hopes the pool has something for everyone and meets the needs of the whole community.

“We really wanted to utilize and re-purpose the existing pool and we were able to do that on the deep end,” said Tabor. “We re-purposed the deep end for eight lanes of competition swimming. The shallow end of the pool was made into an activity area with zero-entry.”

Tabor said the new Doyle St pool and bathhouse were modeled on the original facility built in the 1940s.

“We tried to use the tile architecture so it will fit in nicely with the historic features remaining in the downtown, including the Schaefer Center,” said Tabor. “It restores a historical element of our community that had been lost and has now been reclaimed.”

Other site work at the new Doyle St. pool includes a new parking lot, lighting, landscaping, and fencing.
Tabor says she is also excited to have the pool remaining part of the downtown area.

Toccoa forward funded construction of the new facility via a local bank loan which will be paid back with SPLOST VI monies.
