Local non-profit groups are already gearing up for a holiday season where more people will be turning to them for help.

As the cost of living continues to rise, many more families are turning to groups such as the Salvation Army for help this holiday season than ever before.

Rebecca Dixon, Toccoa Service Director for the Salvation Army said that’s why they are asking for more volunteers to become Christmas bell ringers for their Christmas Kettle program so they can raise the funds needed to help more people.

“I’m reaching out to see if groups or individuals would be willing to volunteer to ring the Christmas bells to promote our Red Kettle Program this year,” she said. “This would take place any Monday – Saturday between 10a and 8p beginning November 25 and going all the way to December 24. We do not ring bells on Sunday.”

The Toccoa Salvation Army serves 11 counties in Northeast Georgia and Dixon said they need about four bell ringers per site, working two-hour shifts each.

Sites include the Ingles in Toccoa and Cornelia and several Walmart locations in the counties they serve.

All monies raised will go to provide help to those in need and their families this Christmas.

“We use the Christmas funds to provide clothes and gifts for over 500 children who live in our service area but we also the funds for our budget to provide homeless resources, service assistance, disaster relief, children’s camp programs and food; food, food, and more food for families for food-insecure families and individuals in our entire 11 counties” Dixon explained. “So I’m hoping people would help us this year.”

Dixon said they are already seeing more people coming to the Toccoa Salvation Army asking for help that have never come before.
