By Ethan Jordan, WNEG Radio, Toccoa

The Toccoa Police Department will be offering a basic handgun course in April.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, on April 9, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. his department will hold the training course at the James A. Neal Training Center.

He says no one under the age of 21 will be admitted including the participant’s children.

Each participant will need to bring an outdoor chair, ear protection, wear closed-toe shoes, and is advised to wear a hat.

Mize says they will have some ear protection if you do not have any.

Please be prepared for any type of weather.

Each student is required to bring their own modern firearm.  No .22 caliber firearms will be allowed. 50 rounds of ammunition are required for the firearm you bring. All firearms must be unloaded upon arrival and checked in by a Range Officer.

Mize says lunch will be provided and they will also have water and snacks available for participants.

Participants must register at the Toccoa Police Department prior to March 25. Mize says when you register, they will make a copy of your Driver’s license and have you sign a waiver of liability.

For those that complete the course, Mize says they are hoping to have an advanced handgun class in a few months.

If you’re unable to attend the basic handgun course on April 9, Mize says they plan to offer it again next year.
