Toccoa Man Killed in Fatal Crash in Franklin County

A Toccoa man has died in a two-car wreck in Franklin County.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper J.R. Dean with GSP Hartwell Post 52 it happened just after 3p Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Stone Bridge and Grady School Roads.

Trooper Dean said a white 1998 Ford F-250 driven by 57-year Robby Douglas McDaniel of Jefferson, was traveling east on Grady School Road approaching the intersection with Stone Bridge Road when a blue 1999 Cadillac DeVille driven by 78-year-old Johnny Burton Freeman of Toccoa was traveling north on Stone Bridge Road approaching its intersection with Grady School Road.

Dean said the preliminary crash investigation revealed that McDaniel failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection and the front of Freeman’s DeVille struck the front passenger’s side of McDaniel’s F-250 in the intersection.

After impact, both the F-250 and the DeVille traveled off the northeast corner of the intersection into a field.

The DeVille overturned and came to an uncontrolled rest, facing north, and the F-250 came to an uncontrolled rest, facing east.

McDaniel was ejected from the F-250 and suffered serious injuries.

Freeman was pronounced deceased at the crash scene.

A juvenile with Freeman in the front passenger seat suffered minor injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville by Franklin County EMS.

McDaniel was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. His condition is not known. McDaniel has been charged with Second Degree Vehicular Homicide, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign and No Seatbelt.
