A City of Toccoa Public Works employee was injured on Friday, December 2, at the Recycling Center, near Swift Street.

According to reports obtained by WNEG Radio in Toccoa, Zachary Johnson was working at the Recycling Center bailer when the accident occurred.

The machine crushed both of his feet.

Johnson was flown to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

Doctors later determined his feet could not be saved and the decision was made to amputate both legs below the knees, and they expect to fit him with prosthetics in the future.

“He was working there and had a catastrophic injury. It’s terrible. We’re just hoping for the best,” Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse said.
