Timeline Set for Franklin County Schools Redistricting

With the new South Franklin Elementary School expected to be completed sometime in the fall, Franklin County School Superintendent Melanie Burton-Brown gave the Board of Education an update on the System’s redistricting plans at their meeting earlier this month.

Burton-Brown said District leaders had their first redistricting meeting in February. On March 6, they met with Tim Cochran of Pioneer RESA and reviewed tentative plans for moving students into the new school and redistricting.

According to Burton-Brown the timeline for redistricting will begin this summer.

Burton-Brown added that parents will begin getting notifications in 2025 regarding which school their child will attend beginning in the 2025-2026 school year.

Also, because of the redistricting, the School System Burton-Brown said, is stopping all requests for intra-district school transfers for the school year 2024-2025.

Burton-Brown said the only exception would be for new kindergarten students who already have siblings enrolled in elementary school in order to keep families together.

Meantime, the Board also received an update on the construction of New South Franklin Elementary School from Alan Mauney with Charles Black Construction.

Mauney said the roof dry-in for the entire school is almost completed and work has begun on installing the exterior brickwork.

Additionally, he said work continues on the interior of the building with crews putting up drywall.

Mauney said so far they have not had any major setbacks in construction.
