Three Wrecks Tie Up Traffic on I-85 Most of Monday

Three wrecks in a span of a couple of hours Monday morning tied up traffic on I-85 Northbound until mid afternoon.

According to Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post trooper PFC William Jordan who handled the wrecks, the series of wrecks began with a motorist in a rental car who lost control at around 7:15a Monday morning.

“A rental car from New York ran off the road and stuck the median and came to rest on the right shoulder,” Jordan said. “I got that one cleared up and about 15 minutes later I had a second crash. He actually hit the guard rail on the guard rail and ended up in the median on the left side next to the fence.”

No sooner had trooper Jordan started working the second wreck when a third wreck happened in the same area involving an 18-wheeler.

“I wasnt there five minutes when an 18-wheeler came around the curve and got cut off by another vehicle. He tried to swerve to avoid a collision and went off in the median next to my patrol car. The traffic delay was due to that 18-wheeler while they tried to pull it out of the mud.”

According to trooper Jordan, the first two vehicles were totaled, but he said there were no serious injuries.

He said the driver in the second wreck suffered some minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The drivers of the first vehicle and the 18-wheeler were not injured.

Traffic was at a basic standstill with one lane closed all of Monday morning and into the afternoon until the wreckage could be cleared.

Both lanes of I-85 were reopened about 2p Monday afternoon.
