Three-Car Wreck Ties Up Traffic Friday on Interstate

A road work crew may have unintentionally been the cause of a three-car wreck Friday on I-85 Southbound.

It happened about 2:30p Friday on I-85 southbound near Exit 173..

According to Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post Assistant Commander Matt Baxley, it started when a GMC Yukon tried to slow down for a G-DOT work detail.

“The lead vehicle, a GMC Yukon had to slow for the traffic ahead, that was stopped for a GDOT work detail,” Baxley said. “The vehicle behind the lead vehicle, an Acura, began to slow as well. A third vehicle, a Dodge Challenger was following the Acura too closely and didn’t have time to stop in time to avoid a collision.”

Baxley said surprisingly, no one was injured in that pile up, but traffic was backed up for miles into South Carolina while crews worked to remove the wreckage.
