Thomas Thanks Lavonia Police for Scholarship in Son’s Name

photo 1Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas is congratulating the winner of the Steven LaCruz Thomas Memorial Scholarship.

Rebecca Herring, an honors senior at Franklin County High School was awarded the $5,000 scholarship Tuesday night during the school’s Honors Night program by Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle.

Carlisle said he and his department wanted to do something to honor the memory of Franklin/Jackson County Sheriff’s

Deputy Steven LaCruz Thomas, the son of Sheriff Stevie Thomas.  Deputy Cruz Thomas was killed last May in a wreck on I-85 while in pursuit of a traffic violator.

On Thursday, Sheriff Thomas said he and his family wish Ms Herring much success.

“The Thomas family would like to say congratulations to Miss Rebecca Herring for receiving the scholarship. We wish you the brightest future,” Thomas said.

Thomas said he and his family are also grateful for the way the City of Lavonia, Police Chief Bruce Carlisle and the entire Lavonia Police Department, chose to remember and honor the memory of their son.

“We also would like to say thank you to the City of Lavonia, Chief Bruce Carlisle and his department for this scholarship and their hard work in paying tribute to our son,” Thomas said. “We also want to thank local businesses who help contribute to this scholarship. Thank you from the bottom of our heart.”

Ms Herring plans to attend Young Harris College in the fall.
