Tag Fee Notice Problems Causing Confusion for Vehicle Owners

Some problems at the state level with tag renewals may be causing some confusion for vehicle owners.

According to Franklin County Tax Commissioner Bobby Martin, vehicle owners who need to renew their tags this month will not be getting a renewal notice from the State in the mail.

Martin said the problem has to do with a third party vendor.

“We became aware in September that there was a problem with the vendor the State uses to send out the pre-bills,” Martin said. “Then in October, we found out that that vendor had filed for bankruptcy.”

Martin said the State contracted with another temporary vendor for the November bills, but it did not go well.

“There were some issues with that vendor. So what the State has decided to do is to send out letters informing citizens they will not be getting a regular bill for December,” Martin said. “However, your tag fee or ad valorum is still due on your birthday.”

According to Martin, if you did not receive any notice from the State and your tag fee or ad valorum is due, there are still a number of ways to access that information.

Martin said you can call your local Tax Commission office or go on line to your County’s Tax Web site.

In Franklin County, you can also pay your tag fee online.
