Stephens County Fire Kills One Victim

State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King said his office continues to look into the cause of a house fire that killed an elderly woman in Stephens County.

It happened January 6 when at about 11:55a a passing motorist reported a woods fire on Oak Valley Road in Toccoa.

Another caller also reported a residential structure fire at that same location with a possible resident inside.

“When fire officials arrived on scene, they found the residential structure fully engulfed in flames,” said Commissioner King. “Upon extinguishment, a victim, identified as an 87-year-old woman living by herself, was found in the living room of the residence. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.”

King said his office is continuing to work with Stephens Co Authorities to determine what started the fire.
