Stephens Co BOC Considers Increasing Funding for Meals on Wheels Program

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners is looking at using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to increase its commitment to Stephens County’s Meals on Wheels Program.

Commissioner Michelle Ivester recommended the change following a presentation from Stephens County Senior Center Director Mary Smith at the recent Stephens County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Smith explained that while the county provides meals for many residents, there are still many people on the waiting list.

Ivester asked if there was anyone on the waiting list who was in dire need.

Commissioner Dean Scarborough recommended that Smith tell those on the waiting list of other agencies that provide food services.

Ivester says that with inflation and the cost of groceries going up, the number of people who need assistance through the Meals on Wheels program will also increase.

County Administrator Phyllis Ayers says in years past, they have received monetary donations that were used to add people to the program.

Chairman James Addison asked if Smith would need to add more volunteers to deliver the meals if they decide to increase how many people are helped through the program.

Smith explained that adding a few people to the program wouldn’t require additional volunteers.

The Commission is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks regarding an increase in funding for the Meals on Wheels Program.
