State Senate Quickly Passes New Election Schedule

As predicted, The Georgia State Senate has moved quickly this week to pass a version of a bill intended to move the state’s 2014 primary election date to May 20.

This is an election year and lawmakers got right to work Monday with what State Representative Alan Powell predicted would be their first order of business – changing Georgia’s election schedule to match the federal government’s.

Under the new schedule, all candidates will be required to file campaign finance reports by March 3.  Qualifying will take place from March 3 to March 7th, primaries will be held in May and run offs will be held in either late June or early July.  The November election date would stay the same.

The proposal passed the Senate’s Ethics Committee on Monday and senators in the full chamber voted 38-15 to pass the bill. It now goes to the State House of Representatives where it is also expected to pass.
