SR17 to Close Next Week for Road Work at Yow Mill Intersection

As work on the widening of SR17 moves forward, another detour to tell you about.

This time Yow Mill Road at its intersection with State Route 17 will close Thursday, October 15 for the next couple of months. GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope tells WLHR News the closure is allow construction crews work on that intersection.

“We’re having to lower the intersection of Yow Mill Road at the intersection with 17,” Pope said. “You can’t do that with traffic running on the roadway. Only about 250 closest to the intersection will be closed. Thankfully, there is a good detour.”

Signs will direct motorists to use Sisk Road as the detour route.

This 6.28 mile long widening of SR 17 from Scott Road to the Stephens Franklin County line has a contract completion date of May 31, 2016.

C.W. Matthews Contracting is building this project at a cost of $46.2 million.

Pope said right now, the work to widen SR17 is coming along well, but is slightly behind schedule because of wet weather.
 
The widening of State Route 17 from Toccoa to Interstate 85 is part of the 2012 Georgia Statewide Freight and Logistics Plan, which outlined the most viable freight routes.

Those are the routes that can provide the necessary connectivity to accommodate present and projected future freight flow through the state.

SR17 is a 293-mile stretch of highway that runs from the North Carolina state line through Northeast and Middle Georgia to the port of Savannah in Chatham County.
