Royston to Unveil New Amphitheater Sunday

The City of Royston is preparing to celebrate the opening of their new amphitheatre this weekend with a ribbon cutting.

Royston Downtown Development Authority Director Michael Crump city officials are inviting the public to the Royston Wellness and Community Park on Sunday from 4p to 7p for the official ribbon cutting, which includes an evening of events and fireworks.

“The opening will be from 4p to 7p. We’re going to have children’s activities and the City will be giving away hot dogs. And then the program will start at about 5p. We’ll have a community choir that will do a short performance. And then we’ll have our official ribbon-cutting opening ceremony with Mayor and Council. Then we have a band performance and then we’ll have fireworks at 7p,” he said.

The idea for the amphitheater came to light in 2019 as a way to put more attractions in the Wellness Park and so draw more people with concerts, plays, and other events.

In January 2020, former Royston Mayor Steve Williams presented the City Council with a check for $50,000 to go towards building the new amphitheater.

The City also received a $5,000 donation from Tri-County Chevrolet.

But construction of the amphitheater was delayed until 2021- hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Groundbreaking for the amphitheater finally took place in January 2021 and completion was expected that spring.

But other delays, such as supply-chain issues which caused a delay in getting the needed materials as well as the weather pushed the completion back to later this month.

Again, the ribbon cutting event will take place Sunday, November 6 from 4p to 7p and the public is invited to attend.
