Royston To Loan Out Bronze Ty Cobb Plaque

Ty Cobb PlaqueThe City of Royston will be loaning out one of its treasured historical possessions to the Southern Association Baseball Conference.

Ty Cobb historian Wesley Fricks recently asked the city council for the use of the bronze plaque of Ty Cobb to take to the conference.

“He was wanting to know if he could take the plaque with him to use in his presentation and the council gave its approval,” said Royston city manager Greg Scott. “The plaque was originally given to Ty Cobb by Earl Mann and when he passed away the family donated it to the City.”

Mann, known as  “Mr. Atlanta Baseball,” was the owner of Atlanta’s original baseball team, the Atlanta Crackers.

The Southern Association Baseball Conference is an annual gathering of writers, historians, fans and former players of the Southern Association teams.

Fricks will be using the plaque as part of a presentation he will be giving at the 11th Annual conference in Atlanta on March 1 regarding Mann’s association with the baseball great and native of Royston.
