Royston Mayor Outlines Goals for Coming Year

ribbon cutting4Now that Royston Mayor David Jordan has been re-elected, along with the incumbent city council members, the town is planning to carry on with its goals for 2014.

Jordan said he was happy and honored that Royston voters have put their confidence in him for another four years.

“I appreciate the many good words that people have said makes it worthwhile,” he said.

Jordan said his re-election meant even more because with the move to the new building, which is the former Royston library, he didn’t have much time to campaign.

“We had so much going on and it takes a lot of time to go around and campaign,” he said. “Instead of getting out in speaking, I was able to get out and work and actually get some things done.”

Jordan said there are lot of projects he, the city council and the city administration are working on.  The first priority is getting into the new city hall and making the needed renovations.

“Immediately, we’re going to complete the move into the new city and we’re planning to make some improvements there,” he said. “We will have a new meeting room and council room. We will no longer be meeting at the Royston Police Department.”

But it doesnt’ stop there.  Jordan said there a lot of other projects in the works, such as a new Streetscape plan on Bowers St. in downtown Royston.  The city is applying for a grant to help pay for that.

They’re also working on renovating the old train depot using grant funding and plans are in the works to open up the newly renovated ball fields.

“So we’re looking at plans and getting things done; plans not just promises,” Jordan said.

Additionally, Ty Cobb Healthcare is planning to do a full renovation of the former Cobb Memorial Hospital in the coming months. Jordan said the City welcomes Ty Cobb’s willingness to stay in the community.

“We’re excited about that, even though the city itself is not involved in that project,” Jordan said. ” But we will be available to help in any we can. We appreciate Ty Cobb and all they’ve done for this community and we look forward to continuing to work with them.”

Ty Cobb Healthcare plans put a behavioral health unit in the Cobb Memorial building that would create 50-60 new jobs. Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2014.
