Royston Celebrates Arbor Day Today With Tree Plantings

The City of Royston is celebrating Arbor Day today with a tree planting.

Officals with the town will gather this morning at 9:30a at the Royston Community and Wellness Park to plant two trees, a Sawtooth Oak and a Dogwood.

The Arbor Day planting today  is sponsored by the City of Royston, Mayor David Jordan and members of the Royston City Council, as well as city staff in conjunction with the Royston Main Street Program, Royston Tree Committee and the Georgia Forestry Division.

Royston was recently named a Tree City USA for 2013.

The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America.

Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management, including: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Participating communities have demonstrated a commitment to caring for and managing their public trees.

This morning’s tree planting is free and open to the public.
