Reports of Vehicle Break Ins on the Rise in Royston

Royston Police are warning citizens to make sure their vehicles are locked when not in use.

On their social media page, it was reported that they’ve been having issues with thefts from vehicles.

In all of their “Entering Auto” reports, the vehicles were unlocked at the time they were broken into.

A single suspect can hit multiple vehicles by simply walking around and trying door handles and if it’s unlocked you can easily become a victim but if it’s locked, the suspect keeps moving.

Chief Donnie Boleman noted many people don’t lock their car when they’re “just running into the store” or “they’ll only be a minute.”

However, he pointed out that a minute is all the time it takes to break into someone’s car.

Additionally, he said to make sure you keep your vehicle’s windows rolled up and that if you leave items in the car or truck conceal them.

“Most of the time, thieves are just looking for a quick score and if they see something they want, you become a victim,” he said.

Also, any time you have something stolen from your vehicle, no matter how minor, please report it.

Boleman said the reports are how his officers know where they are having issues and where they may need to toughen their crime prevention efforts.
