Repaving of Downtown Lavonia Begins Monday

Motorists who routinely travel through downtown Lavonia may need to do a little extra planning beginning next week .

That’s when some major road repaving will begin.  According to city manager Gary Fesperman, work will  likely be going on throughout the summer months.

“These paving projects will happen on and off during the summertime,” he said. “There will be some traffic inconveniences. The paving downtown will be scheduled to cause as little inconvenience to shoppers and businesses as possible.”

Fesperman said work will be done in phases.  Phase One is actually underway he said with road crews doing patching of cracks this week on a section of downtown from SR59 to Grogan St. in front of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce building.

“Beginning Monday, weather permitting, they will pave the section of Main St. from SR59 down in front of the Gazebo to Grogan St. and then catch from the railroad tracks at Grogan St. and back to the caution light over on Hartwell Road,” Fespserman said.

Fesperman said repaving on Grogan St. from Main St. to SR17 will not be done because of future plans to rework the sidewalks.

Another project slated for this summer is a plan by the Georgia Department of Transportation to repave SR59, which runs through the intersection with SR17 and through downtown Lavonia.

Fesperman said that work is set to begin sometime this summer and will also likely cause traffic delays.

Total cost for the city project will come to about $90,000 according to Fesperman and will be paid for using city SPLOST funds already designated for the work.
