Renovations to Schaefer Center Facade Continue

Renovations to the façade at the Schaefer Center in Downtown Toccoa continue to take shape. City of Toccoa Planning Director Connie Tabor says the renovation is going well.

“We are real excited about the progress that has been made thus far, says Tabor; “of course, we received grant funding from the Georgia Department of Economic Development, as well as the Georgia Council for the Arts for the removal of the brick veneer façade as well as the stucco underneath.”

Tabor says they were excited to discover pieces that tell the story of the original façade.

“In removing the brick we found clues of what the original façade looked like. There are the original poster boxes that are there as well as the original footprint of the doors. Architectural details are becoming more and more evident as the brick is removed.”

Tabor says the Schaefer Center will be an anchor for the West side of Doyle Street.

“We are real excited about a whole Arts Entertainment type District. Once the façade is renovated we will be able to put our efforts toward applying for grants through the Fox Theater Institute for the marquee.”

Tabor says the goal for the completion of the façade renovation of the Schaefer Center is June 1st.
