Rain Again Washes Out Royston Opening Games at New Ballfields

photo 1Rain has again pushed back the re-dedication of the Royston Baseball fields that was set for tonight.

“The Franklin County Little League Board has cancelled the opening games scheduled for this evening,” said Royston Police Chief Donnie Boleman Monday morning.

Boleman, who helped spearhead the renovation of the Joe T. Cunningham Ball Fields said a special ribbon cutting ceremony and two opening games were to have taken place March 29, but were rained out.

The games were then pushed back to tonight, but even if the rain tapers off later this afternoon, the fields are too wet for play.

A big event is planned, according to Boleman, once the weather cooperates, as the City of Royston celebrates the return to Little League baseball.

The ball fields had essentially been abandoned by the Franklin County Little League for years due to a lack of funds to operate them. However, two years ago, the Little League board gave the fields back to the City of Royston. photo 2

Since then, work on bringing the ball fields back to life has been going on using SPLOST monies, grant funding, and private donations, and lots of volunteer time.

The renovated fields include new baseball diamonds, bleachers, dugouts, new fencing and lighting, as well as a new concession stand and restrooms.
