Public Comment Invited for Corps’ Updated Lake Hartwell Master Plan

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District is asking for public comment on the Lake Hartwell Master Plan.

The Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, examined retaining the current master plan, established in 1981.

However, officials recommend developing a new master plan to align actions at the project with the current “overall land and water management plan, resource objectives, and associated design and management concepts,” according to the announcement.

Corps spokesman Billy Birdwell said a lot has changed on Lake Hartwell over the past 40 years and it’s time to look at the entire master plan to see what, if anything, needs to be changed.

Birdwell said that doesn’t necessarily mean everything in the current master plan is going to change, but they are asking for public input to get a better idea of what should be changed.

Birdwell said a new master plan will also provide for a more orderly means to develop recreation facilities by government agencies and other lessees.

The public comment period closes at 12 noon, on Wednesday, May 28.

The public may review the entire proposal and the Draft EA at https://go.usa.gov/xHP67.  Officials noted the online files are large and may take several minutes to open or download.
