Process to Fill Hart BOC District 2 Seat Begins

With the passing of Hart County commissioner Dan Reyen comes another vacancy on the Hart County Board of Commissioners.

The board recently added new member Jim Carey, who is filling the unexpired term of  former commissioner and Hartwell mayor-elect Brandon Johnson for District 3.  Carey was elected November 5th  month in a special election and sworn into office the following week.

Hart County Commission chair Bill Myers met Monday with Hart County Probate Judge Bob Smith to discuss the special election that will have to take place in the coming months to fill Reyen’s District 2 seat until the end of this term.

Smith said a special election will likely be held on March 18th with qualifying at the end of January.

So far, an exact for qualifying has not been set.

Smith tells WLHR News he will be checking with the Secretary of State’s office on when to hold qualifying, but he said Monday it must be six to eight weeks before the special election.

Whoever wins the special election in March will serve out Reyen’s term which runs out in December 2014.

Another special election will take place in November 2014 to fill the District 2 and District 3 seats for another four years.
