Police/Chamber Safety Classes Popular, Says Chief

There are just two classes left in the free safety series by the Lavonia Police and the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce and so far, the classes have been a success.

That’s according to Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle.

“It’s just been going well,” he said. “We’ve had a number of people attending each week and we’ve been able to cover a number of topics and have some good classes.”

The series, called “Safe & Secure,”  has been running bi-weekly since February and has covered a number of safety topics from protecting one’s identity to the criminal justice system.

Classes have been taught by Carlisle, as well as District Attorney Parks White and Chief Assistant District Attorney Geoffrey Fogus.

Monday night, EMS personnel were on hand to teach basic First Aid, and the two remaining classes will cover CPR.  But Carlisle said so far, most who have attended the safety classes have been interested in personal safety.

“Some of the first one on personal safety generated the most interest because they covered topics like how to protect your identity and issues like that. They were things people could use on a daily basis,” Carlisle said.

Carlisle said the Criminal Justice series was also popular.

Anyone interested in taking the next two CPR classes should call the Lavonia Police Department at 706=-356-4848 or the Lavonia Chamber at 706-356-8202.
