One Dead, One Injured in Elbert County Wreck

One person is dead and another in serious condition after a fatal accident on the Hartwell Highway just before the official New Year’s holiday weekend began.

It happened about 6p December 30th just north of Elberton on Hwy 77.

Elbert County EMS Director and Coroner Chuck Almond said 39-year-old Karris Spann’s 2004 GMC Yukon was traveling north on Highway 77 when his vehicle left the roadway and overturned.

“The driver was ejected from the vehicle, and injuries he received from the accident resulted in his death after treatment by EMS personnel and the staff at Elbert Memorial Hospital”, said Almond.

Almond said a female passenger in the vehicle was injured.

“A passenger in the car was also injured and was entrapped and was treated at the local hospital, and was later transferred to AnMed Hospital in Anderson”, said Almond.

The passenger’s name has not been released, and at last check was in serious condition.

According to the  Georgia State Patrol, the female passenger told authorities the driver swerved to avoid a deer that was in the roadway and lost control.
