Northeast Georgia Road Work Underway

With summer now officially underway, crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation are out in force across the state repairing and resurfacing roads.

But the GDOT promises to be as non-disruptive as possible while making critical improvements to the state’s transportation system.

GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope.

Pope said, “Typically our construction season is March through November.  So we’re right in the middle of that construction season now.  A lot of our big projects on the interstates have night only work hours or weekend only work hours.  So we want you to know that we are going to be in the way this Summer, but we’re trying to minimize that impact to motorists.

Pope said those of us who will be traveling around the state for vacation or business, should plan ahead and be aware of possible construction delays on Interstates and State Routes.

And of course, she said, there’s an app for that.

Pope said, “If you’re going somewhere that you have not been in a while, or a place you only go for vacation, please go to our website www.georgia511.org and look at your path to see if there are detours or lane closures along your path.  You can know on the front end.  There’s even an app for roadwork, Georgia roadwork for most smartphones.   So please think about those road closures before you actually get into the road and you get caught in the backup.”

Pope said there should not be any road closures, but there could be delays.

In Northeast Georgia, construction of the Northeast Bypass continues in White County and next month, crews will be in Lavonia for some major resurfacing work, according to GDOT spokesman Teri Pope.

That she said, could cause some delays through town.

Pope said, “Yes, there are several resurfacing projects planned this Summer for Franklin County.  Depending on how many lanes the road is when it gets resurfaced, we either can shift traffic if it’s wider than two lanes to allow one lane to flow in each area.  Or we have to use a pilot car and take it down to one lane as we resurface in that area.  So resurfacing definitely impacts traffic flow.  We want you to know about them before you get stopped.  But we will have several resurfacing projects this Summer in Franklin County.”

In Lavonia, the DOT plans to resurface SR59 from SR17 to Vickery St./SR77 and on SR77 north to White St and South to the Hart County line.

No exact date has yet been announced for those two projects.
