Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter in Lavonia has stepped in to help.

Shelter director Sheri Lockhart said they have taken some of the cats into their program.

“We were asked by the Georgia Department of Agriculture if we could help the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter out by taking in some the cats,” Lockhart said. “We went over and took six of the cats. They’re all adults. It’s shelters helping shelters in the time of need becuase there’s no way they could house 77 cats.”

Lockhart said the cats taken to the Lavonia shelter will eventually be put up for adoption once they’ve been given a clean bill of health.

“We’re goingn to make sure they’re totally healthy. Some of the (77) cats did test positive for Feline Leukemia, so we’re going to have these cats tests and seen by a vet. Once we’re sure they’re healthy, they will be put up for adoption,” she said.

The cats in question include two calicos, an orange and white tabby and several other tabbies.   Anyone interested in adopting one the cats should contact the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter at 706-356-5363 or email: [email protected].
