Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter Fall Rabies Clinic Coming Up Saturday

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is holding its annual fall Rabies Clinic on Saturday.

Shelter Director Tammi Jourdenais said the clinic is on Saturday from 10a to 2p at the shelter on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia.

This is the second rabies clinic the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter does every year and Jourdenais said it’s for anyone who needs to have their dog or cat vaccinated against rabies, regardless of which County they live in.

As we have been telling you over the years, there is no cure for rabies either in pets or in people, but you can protect them and your family.

Although the occurrence of rabies among humans has declined noticeably over the years, the disease continues among wild animals and those wild animals can transmit the disease to domestic animals such as dogs and cats.

Over the summer, Habersham County reported an incident in which 18 stray cats being fed by a kind-hearted citizen had to be euthanized because one was found to have had rabies.

District II Public Health says adults and children alike should avoid contact with unfamiliar animals, whether domesticated or wild – even if the animals appear friendly.

Signs an animal may be rabid include staggering, appearing restless, aggressive, having difficulty walking, seeming overly friendly, or appearing to be challenging.

Again, the fall rabies clinic is coming up Saturday from 10a to 2p at the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter in Lavonia.

A one-year rabies vaccine is $10, and a three-year rabies shot is $20.

Dog and cat distemper shots will also be $10 each, as well as kennel cough for $10, and microchipping for $25.

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is located on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia.
