New Year’s eve fireworks safety

Many New Year’s Eve revelers will be out on Lake Hartwell or at home tonight ringing in 2022 with fireworks.

That’s why Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King is urging people to use extreme caution to avoid fires and severe injuries when using fireworks this New Year’s Eve.

King tells WLHR News each year in the U.S., hospital emergency rooms treat roughly 12,000 people for fireworks-related injuries.

In Franklin County, there are no restrictions against the use of fireworks, but sheriff’s deputies do have discretion when investigating noise complaints due to fireworks, especially late at night.

The Lavonia Police Department follows state laws when it comes to fireworks and there are no local restrictions in Canon or Royston.

In Hart County, fireworks are prohibited after midnight due to noise concerns.

In Hartwell, there are no restrictions but officers also have discretion when it comes to noise complaints due to fireworks.

The City of Toccoa has a noise law under its nuisance ordinance, according to City Manager Billy Morse that bans shooting off fireworks inside city limits at any time of the year.

Morse said anyone shooting off fireworks in a neighborhood inside the city limits is subject to a citation, even on New Year’s Eve.

Stephens County allows fireworks but residents must abide by the state law.

Commissioner King offers the following fireworks safety suggestions to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve:

  • Purchase fireworks from a licensed fireworks dealer.
  • Observe all state laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Read the labels carefully before igniting any fireworks.
  • Ensure that an adult supervises all firework activities.
  • Never allow children to ignite fireworks.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never try to relight a firework.
  • Have a garden hose or bucket of water nearby.
  • Use caution with animals. Excitement, noise, and lights can cause fear and stress.

In 2015, the sale and use of most consumer types of fireworks, which include firecrackers, skyrockets, and roman candles, became legal to use in Georgia.
