Names of Family Killed in Friday Wreck Released

The long holiday weekend turned out to be busier and more tragic than expected for local law enforcement.

In Hart County, the Georgia State Patrol continues its investigation into a fatal wreck Friday that killed most of one family.

According to Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland, it happened about 3:30p Friday afternoon on the 77Ext/Lavonia Highway.

Cleveland said a car driven by Marco Hernandez, age and address unknown, crossed the center line near the Lavonia Speedway and hit the oncoming vehicle head on, killing all three inside.

Hernandez was injured and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Meantime, the names of those killed Friday have been released.  They are 48-year old Jerry Cannon, 32 year-old Katherine Cannon and their 5-year old daughter, Marie.  An 11-year old son was not in the car.

Cleveland said Hernandez faces a laundry list of charges, including DUI, and three counts of felony homicide by vehicle.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced for the Cannon family.

Meantime, over the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday, 17 people were killed on Georgia roadways – seven more than last year.
The holiday traffic count began at 6p Wednesday and ended at midnight Sunday.
