More Charges for SC Man Involved in Elbert Co Manhunt

In Elbert County, more charges filed against a South Carolina man caught after a recent massive manhunt.

On Monday, Elbert County Sheriff Melvin Andrews announced 26-year old Jonathan Reid Cann of Iva, SC had been charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault.

Cann and 23-year old Chelsea Brook Clay of Edgefield, SC were arrested the evening of September 28th after a massive daylong manhunt near the Montvideo Community on the Georgia-South Carolina state line.

That morning, Elbert County 9-1-1 received a call regarding two vehicles that were on fire near the Georgia border off of Highway 368.

When officers arrived on the scene, the vehicles were on fire and no one was near either of them.
A witness told officers when he saw the cars on fire, he stopped to help the couple, but Cann allegedly pointed a gun at him and told him to leave.

Later on the 28th, investigators found the body of an unknown person in the trunk of one of the burned vehicles, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Anderson County investigators were notified and called in to assist.
Elbert County Sheriff Melvin Andrews said last week, the death investigation has now turned into a homicide investigation.

“The autopsy on the victim found inside of the trunk of the vehicle has been completed, and the preliminary autopsy results indicate that the cause of death was homicide by gunshot,” said Andrews.

So far, Andrews has still not released the name of that victim.  Cann and Clay have not been charged with that homicide.

In addition to the aggravated assault charges, both are also with 1st Degree Arson and Concealing the Death of Another.
