Missing North Carolina Teen Actually Found in Franklin County, Not Rabun

We have an update on a story we told you about earlier in the week regarding a missing teen from Mooresville, North Carolina.

According to initial reports, the girl was found in Rabun County, but on Wednesday, Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas confirmed the 16-year old, identified as Elizabeth Mayo, was located in Franklin County Sunday afternoon.

Mayo had been reported from her Mooresville, NC home on December 9th. Authorities in North Carolina said Mayo was in need of medication.

First reports indicated she had been spotted early Sunday morning in the Rabun County area. Clayton Police say witnesses reported seeing her near a covered bridge, but she ran off.

Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy Major Chris Looney says he received a call Sunday afternoon from a concerned citizen in the Martin area.

“At about 3:20p Sunday afternoon, the Franklin County Sheriff’s office received a call from a resident on Pleasant Hill Circle who said they had found a young female who was crying and said she needed some help,” Looney said. “Deputy Todd Coker responded. After further investigation, it was determined she was the missing juvenile from North Carolina.”

Looney said the Sheriff’s office contacted the Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services and the Mooresville Police Department.

Looney said Mayo had hitchhiked into Georgia from her home in Mooresville.

He said she has been returned to Mooresville and turned over the North Carolina Department of Family and Children’s Services.
