Madison BOE Votes to Remove Scripture Verses From HS Monument

Bible verses will be removed from a monument at Madison County High School.

Mainstreetnews.com reports that after a public hearing Tuesday night to a packed room, the Madison County School Board voted to remove the Scripture from the monument after coming out of executive session, but leave the monument in place.

The monument at the edge of Red Raider field was donated to the school and contains a number of Scripture verses.

Football teams touch the monument on the way on to the field before each game, but a county resident complained to the group, Freedom From Religion who sent a letter to the school board demanding the monument be removed, calling the Scripture verses inscribed on it a violation of separation of Church and State.

Last Saturday a group from New Bethel Congregational Holiness Church in Danielsville held a rally at the monument to show their support for the monument and the verses on it.

But despite public support, the board voted to have the Scripture verses removed and other non-Biblical verses placed on it instead.

On Wednesday, David Noise, legal director for the American Humanist Association an athiest group from Washington DC, said they were pleased with the board’s decision.
