Local Humane Society Overwhelmed with Cats and Kittens

ClaudiaThis has been a particularly bad year for scores of unwanted litters of kittens and it’s apparently not over yet.

Local animal shelters and humane societies continue to be overrun with more cats and kittens than they can find homes for.

Hart County Humane Society president Donna Madkiff says the problem this summer has been overwhelming.

That’s why she is encouraging pet owners to take advantage of two programs the Humane Society is offering to help get more cats spayed or neutered.

“That’s right. We have two programs available. We have a free program for eligible hart County residents that meet the income guidelines. The guidelines are very generous. You can make a good bit of money and still qualify,” Madkiff said. “Then we have a low-cost spay/neuter program for people above that income guideline.”

The Hart County Humane Society has received a number of grants over the years to make those free or low-cost spay neuter programs available to existing pet owners.  Madkiff said there are several ways to obtain the applications for those programs.

“The applications are at all of our local veterinarians, Royston Animal Hospital, Three Trees Veterinary Clinic, and Hartwell Animal Hospital, and also online at Hart Human.org.  Just fill it out, send it in with proof of income for the free program and a self-addressed stamped envelope and we will send you a certificate to take to one of the participating veterinarians,” Madkiff explained.

Additionally, when you adopt a kitten from the Hart County Humane Society, they come already spayed or neutered.

Madkiff said currently her group has a number of very healthy adult cats already fixed waiting for people to adopt them.

“We have a cat room at the Petsmart in Anderson where we can leave cats and kittens that are ready for adoption,” she said. “The adoption fee is $66. All of the cats and kittens are already spayed or neutered, have had all of their vaccinations and are microchipped.”
