Lavonia Works on Next Step to Institute New Sunday Alcohol Ordinance

Now that Lavonia has passed liquor-by-the-drink on Sundays, work begins on creating and implementing the ordinance.

On Tuesday, Lavonia voters approved the referendum that was requested to be put on the ballot by local restaurants who have a license to sell alcohol by the drink.

Lavonia Assistant Manager Charles Cawthon said the City attorney will now put together the ordinance.

“We’re going to have to amend our code section that deals with alcohol sales to include the Sunday sale,” Cawthon said. “We should know shortly from our attorney how we will proceed.”

Cawthon said it’s not clear yet what the exact procedure will be nor when the new ordinance will go into effect.

“It’s going to be within the next 60 days, but could fall anywhere within that depending on what kinds of readings we have to have and what kind of procedures we have to do,” he said.

Voters passed the referendum Tuesday by a vote 128 to 111.

A similar ordinance failed two years ago by just one vote.
