Lavonia VFW Extends Donation Period for Kentucky Tornado Victims

VFW member Richard Roberts moves boxes of donations to trailer Monday

Another truckload of donations for the tornado victims in Kentucky left the Lavonia VFW Post 5897 Monday and more donations are still coming in.

Members of the VFW Post 7116 in Sylvania, Georgia near Augusta drove to Lavonia Monday to drop off one of several trailer loads of donations they’ve collected.

David Avery is the Adjutant for the Sylvania post.

He said they brought a trailer load of all different kinds of items but there other trailers full of donated goods still waiting to go to Kentucky back at their post.

“Food clothes, food, more food, about $2000 worth of toys but this ain’t all of it,” he said. “We’ve got a trailer load of men and women’s clothes that’s stuck down at our post.”

The Lavonia VFW Post is serving as a hub for other posts in their district to bring their donations.

Post Commander Jason Nichols said Davis Transfer has donated trucks to take donations up to VFW Posts in Kentucky.  The first loads went out last Friday and they are continuing to take donations and fill as many trucks as they can.

“We’ve got two 53-ft trailers that have been loaded, a 12-ft trailer, and a 12-ft shuttle van. We’ve got one trailer onsite that’s completely full that needs to go and it’s going tomorrow morning. The other truck has already been up there and unloaded along with the van and the trailer. So, everything is going fabulous with our effort now,” he said.

Nichols said because of the outpouring of support, the VFW in Lavonia is extending its donation period through this Friday, December 24.

Anyone interested in making a donation can bring it to the Post located at 144 E. Main St. In Lavonia.  If you have questions, you can call them at 706-356-5227.
