Lavonia to Hold Special Election to Fill Post 1 City Council Seat

With the passing of Lavonia City Councilman Don Canady, the City Council now has a vacant seat to fill.

Canady passed away last Saturday leaving two and half years still left in his term.

Late Tuesday, City Manager Gary Fesperman announced a special election will take place June 16th at Lavonia City Hall.

The Lavonia City Council and Mayor Ralph Owens met for a very brief called meeting Tuesday evening to formally approve a directive to hold a special election to fill Canady’s seat.

Fesperman said a special election is required by the City charter.

“The charter states that should we have a vacancy where there is less than three months left in the remaining term, we can appoint someone. If it is more than that, we have to have a special election,” Fesperman said. “Since Don Canady had approximately two and half years left in his term, this requirement must be fulfilled with a special election.”

Qualifying for the Post 1 City Council seat will be held April 27th – 29th from 8:30a – 4:30p at Lavonia City Hall.

The qualifying fee is $35.

Voters will cast their ballots at Lavonia City Hall on June 16th from 7a to 7p.

Early voting will begin May 27th and run through June 12th at the Franklin County Board of Elections Registrations office in Carnesville.

Anyone who wants to vote in the special city election but is not registered, may register at the elections office in Carnesville by close of business May 18th.

Should a run-off be required, the run-off election will take place on July 14th.
